Ging’s Short Serious Business Review #2: Eat-Man '98

Synopsis from Anime News Network: The continuing adventures of Bolt Crank, the World's Greatest Mercenary, who has the ability to eat any object, mostly metal and weapons. When the time comes, Bolt can then reproduce those weapons and items in his right hand.

First Impressions: Sweet...this guy is eating shit and summoning arm beasts...cool idea.

Character: Character development in this anime is lacking, the main character doesn't develop at all throughout, but that is not to say that here isn't any, there is a substantial amount of characters who last one episode who have nice quickly done build ups from their 20 minutes of air time. Even then though, it was lacking. 4.3/10

Plot: Having such a neat concept, one would think that the plot would put the character towards some sort of goal towards something or even putting him in a plot. This is by far the worst part of the anime, since it is almost non-existent. There are some small dual part episode story arch's that almost make a plot, but not really. The lack of an ending was also a let down. 2/10

Animation: Slightly above average, not bad at all, but still could use a little more. 7/10

Sound: Nothing worth mentioning, but still decent enough. 6/10

Enjoyment: This is the most troubling part of the anime, while it lacks in so many places, I was drawn to it for some reason I don't know, perhaps it is just the mystery on what the hell is going on, but I think that the enjoyment is higher than everything else mainly because it can make you forget about it's lack of plot until you finish it. 8.5/10

Overall: Pretty bad, although I enjoyed it for reasons I don't understand. You might too if you are up for a weird story you wont know the half of since it never seems to have be given an ending. 6/10

**don’t ask how the hell I come up with the overall score.

Podcast: Episode #2 - Cosprayers

This week is Cosprayers. Another bad anime hooray! It's about a young
girl named Koto who accidently seals way the Sun Goddess. By her actions, she has trapped
herself in another world and she must work together with other priestesses called cosprayers
to kick evil booty and destroy the black towers which keep the Sun Goddess sealed. Yes sir,
hot virgin priestesses running around kicking monster ass. Not as interesting as it sounds.

As customary, before we begin our review we'll talk about a few other things first. First we talk about 4kids TV losing 5.5 million dollars from April to June (Source). Next up is a article on a guy who threatens to blow up comiket (Source). Lastly, we talk about Code Geass and how seasontwo is to air on Adult Swim (Source). Well that's it! Ging’s Short Serious Business Review #1: Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann

Yeah, I am going to try to write a review every week for you guys, this week I decided to do Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

Ging’s Short Serious Business Review #1

TENGEN TOPPA GURREN LAGANN

*Note: I know it sounds like I have nothing but good things to say about this anime but that is purely because of it’s untouchable amazing-ness. The descriptions for each rated section are short mainly because I don’t want to spoil anything and it’s been a while since I have seen the WHOLE series. (I am currently re-watching Gurren Lagann via the dubs on Sci-Fi channel though)

First Impressions: The plot is odd, but for a first three episodes outlook is solid, great potential.

Character:
The character development in Gurren Lagann was astounding; all the important characters had both their pasts and futures explored in one way or another. The personalities of all of the characters were for the most part extremely unique in their own way. Speaking of Personalities all of the characters, all of the personalities connected with other ones in a purely brilliant way. 10/10

Plot:
Quite possibly the most unique plot for an anime since the ‘80s. So many twists and turns with limited awkward pacing, this anime executes the plot in a way that I don’t think they could have done it better. That in it’s self is friggin’ spectacular. It always keeps you on your toes. 10/10

Animation: Excellent, with the exception of episode 4 where the animation was flopped, not much else to say on that. 8.8/10

Sound:
Well made despite my dislike for it, still worthy of praise though. 9/10

Enjoyment: I watched it all back to back and loved almost every minute of it 10/10

Overall:
Almost a flawless anime despite the fuck up with episode 4’s animation and a few other small things. 10/10

**don’t ask how the fuck I come up with the overall score.

Podcast: Episode #1 - Otome Wa Boku Ni Koishiteru

Note:The text in the above screenshot is the sub-groups note. Everyone was thinking the same thing...
OTOME WA BOKU NI KOISHITERU

(Time: 40:55)

It's Anime Pulp's first podcast! This week we review one of the worst anime to ever grace our monitors and TVs. Otome Wa Boku Ni Koishiteru, or you can remove the "-eru" from the end there and get what we have dubbed it. It tells the story of a guy whos grandpas dying wish is for him to attend a loosely metioned all girls christian school. Naturally being a guy makes this really difficult so what do you do? Say "Fuck you, grandpa!"? NO! You dress up like a chick, act like a chick, and wear fake breast thingys. This guys a natural... too natural.

Before we hit the review, we like to start off with some non-sequitors. We discussed a little about the Cowboy Bebop live action movie, the Clannad Doujin-game "Tomoyo Fighter ~It's an exciting life~ Perfect Edition" by chinchillasoft (links below), and the bad Gurren-Lagann dub that's been airing on the sci-fi channel. Make sure to check us out and subscribe!

Con Report: Anime Expo '08

I understand that it's been way over a month since Anime Expo, but since this blog wasn't up yet and I've been busy, now is the time. So anyways, here's my AX adventure.

The story begins on Wednesday, July 2nd. I was sleeping when my phone rang. It was my aunt. She asked if I wanted to come over to go to Anime Expo. I was thinking, "Hells yeahhhh." I quickly called my mother and told her I'm going to California today. She naturally thought I was crazy as all lovable mothers. I responded, "Of course." So I get first-class tickets to California because they were the same price as regular ones. I quickly packed up, and got out of the house an hour later. Hours and hours later, I'm finally in California and stayed at my cousin's place.

I didn't sleep at all.

The next day, my cousin and I arrived to Anime Expo with his friends. It was 100 degrees outside, and parking was $20. Since I didn't pre-register, I had to go my separate ways in order to get my 4 day pass. Surprisingly, the was no line. I just walked into the building, walked into the register room, and entered my credit card on one of the tens of computers. The passes were instantly printed in the booth corresponding to each table of computers. I walked out of the place in less than 10 minutes. What is more surprising is that it took less time for me to get my pass than for my cousin, who already pre-registered online.

Some girls near the exit of the register room.

The first panel I went to was the Shokotan panel. As was expected, she was humorous and charming. Shokotan said her dream boyfriend would be Vegeta from DBZ and that she does not get asked out a lot. I find that awkward, considering how immensely popular she is to otaku culture. Then again, her audience are otakus. She also explain to us some of words from her "language" she made up for her blog. Watching her impersonating Bruce Lee was fun, and her unscheduled karaoke of the the Gurren-Lagann theme was fun.

Sorairo Days...

After that, I went to the autograph session. About an hour later, I finally got to get her CD signed and shook her hand. My day was already over at around 3 because my ride wanted to go home. I wanted to visit other panels such as the Aniplex and J-Pop panel . I also wanted to see Paprika on the big screen. I didn't want to go the AMV contest though, not because I wasn't interested in seeing the fan work but because I had a feeling it would be really crowded.

On Friday (day 2), it was still hot as hell again. The highlight of this day was the Jyukai concert. I didn't have to wait in line at all. Around 30 minutes before the concert, I just walked up to the guys giving tickets and walked across the street towards the Nokia Theater. The workers said that cameras were not allowed, but they actually didn't care. This was great because I didn't have a place to put it. After watching a lot of previews of just-licensed shows and some currently playing in Japan, Yoko Ishida performed. It was fun, but there was definitely lack of planning. After more previews Jyukai performed. They were great, and the singer had a beautiful voice. I did not like the camera work done though. It was just too loose, and it felt like they didn't know what they were doing. Thankfully, their performance outshone the production work. After the concert I waited in line for the Jyukai autograph for an hour. There was also a Yoko Ishida autograph session, but after standing for ten minutes, a volunteer told us that she was not coming. The group dispersed and the Jyukai line was extended further than it was initially.

I then attend the Bandai panel and the ANN panel. One particularly interesting announcement ANN made was the launch of the ANN video player. The video player would be used to show anime commercials. What's even better is the potential to use this video player as a way for anime fans to watch streams legally with commercials. Digital distribution and online streaming has become a major part of the way we watch media, and it'll be nice to see is ANN and the anime companies join to allow legal streaming. I also wanted to attend the Anime Genesis + Anime Diet panel and Geneon Premiers panel, but I had to sadly leave.

Shokotan's concert was the highlight of Saturday (day 3). Once again, I didn't have to wait in line to get a ticket. Since I only had about 3 hours of sleep, I was dozing off before the concert started. I was also too tired to walk towards the front of the stage to take pictures. Her show was planned tremendously better than Yoko Ishida + Jyukai's concert. There were planned light shows, music videos to keep us entertain during intervals, and of costumes. She cosplayed as Haruhi, Rei, and Sailor Moon and sang popular songs from the anime the anime characters were in. She also played some of her original work from Big Bang, but the best part of the concert was her performance of Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann songs. The last performance, besides the encore, was the new song for the Gurren-Lagann movie. She seem really nervous, but I like the new song.

Other interesting things include character designer Akemi Takada's panel and the Mega64 Panel of Doom. It was interesting to hear Takada's opinions on character designing and her experiences working with Mamoru Oshii for the Patlabor movie. The Mega64 panel was probably the funnest panel at AX. They just talked and showed some videos they made and answered many questions from the audience. They just seem like some very cool guys doing what they love. I also stayed for the Kadokawa panel, but had to leave early...again.

Mega64!

Sunday (day 4) was a short day. This was the day that I finally went through the dealer's room and artist alley. Besides buying a lot of stuff, I also got a signed poster of Gurren-Lagann by Kyle Hebert (Kamina) and Yuri Lowenthal (Simon).

Yuri Lowenthal (left) and Kyle Hebert (right)

I would also like to add that my cousin's friend (sorry, I forgot your name) cosplayed as Ichimaru from Bleach and slept through a lot of the day.

My fondest memory of that day was my cousin's other friend cosplayed a schoolgirl with a really short skirt. Guys were putting their hands behind her back to take pictures, and one guy even told her that she was "the girlfriend he never had". Funny how the girl was 14 years old. My cousin's friend (cosplaying as Ichimaru) and I busted out laughing each time a guy would put his arm behind the poor girl's back.

I had heard previously that the lines were incredibly long, but I guess I can assume that they have fixed the problem this year. Besides the heat outside, my con experience had been overall good. It wasn't as overwhelming as I had expected, but I'll will be a lot more prepared next year. I also forgot to mention this is also my first anime con attendance. Attending the largest anime convention in the world...what a way to start. I wish I took some pictures of the exterior as well as some shots at the Shokotan concert. The following pictures will be pictures of stuff I bought as well as pictures of cosplayers.

Some pictures of the stuff I bought:

Spent way too much money...

I got Shokotan and Jyukai's autographs.

A Yotsuba&! picture book, Cowboy Bebop artbook, and Yoko fanbook

3 of the 4 EVAs I got

Wish I knew the artist...forgot to ask.

Forgot to ask artist again...

I bought the following three stuff for fellow podcaster Ryan.

I also bought a Bleach poster for a cousin.

About Us

Anime Pulp is a podcast that talk about crappy anime and sometimes good ones. With their combine strengths they can conquer all. Besides reviewing anime they talk about anime news and other things that interest them. Anime Pulp Is made up of Ging, Nam, and Ryan and began as Anime Judgement. The podcast was specifically made to support of a small forum, but due to some differences they have moved to take podcasting head on. Besides podcasting, the three enjoy attending anime conventions and BSing on Skype. You can email them at animepulp@gmail.com.

NamName:
Nam
Age: 20
Description: Nam was first introduced into anime (and knew what it was) when Dragonball was first aired on Fox. Nam did not, however, really get into anime until he was 12 years old and bought the individual Cowboy Bebop dvds. After that, he was hooked into anime as not just a way to waste time but as an artform. Some of his favorite anime include Cowboy Bebop, Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen (Samurai X: Trust & Betrayel), and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Nam stopped watching anime for a brief period of time, but since college started and he had so much free time, he's getting back to watching anime. He lives in New Orleans and is considered to be the harsh critic of the three. Other than anime he likes practically all forms of art, including photography, film, and music.

RyanName:
Ryan
Age: 19
Description: Ryan is an easy-going and somewhat random. He tends to swear often and has horrible hygiene habits that make those around him cringe. Ryan's father is responsible for getting him into anime by feeding him old shows while he was a kid. The only one he can remember watching as a kid is Sailor Moon (how cliche, how sad) whenever it was airing on TV. Ryan also remembers watching things like Tenchi Muyo on Toonami. He began searching for things not on TV by hunting down Love Hina vids on the internet using Kazaa lite with his sorry-56k dial up modem. He likes comedy and action. Ryan tends to stray away from anything too dramatic or anything heavy with politics. His favorite anime is Tengen Toppa-Gurren Lagann.

GingName: Ging
Age: 15
Description: Ging is a male human. His family is all into anime, so it seems just natural for him to be too. He has had everything from Sailor Moon to Astroboy stuffed down his retinas. He has been known to be “insane” and more recently he has developed a new fetish of females staring. Ging’s favourite genres of anime would most likely be drama and action. Unlike Nam and Ryan, Ging lives in Ohio Canada. Ging’s top five favourite anime include Cowboy Bebop, Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann, Yuu Yuu Hakusho, GunGrave, and Hunter x Hunter. He has no need to say anymore at this moment.
